Back after a year, this blog will provide weekly updates about my life in Freetown, Sierra Leone. Why should you read? Because I'm just like you...young, love food and travel and a good night out in heels

My home in Freetown
The garden outside our apartment
My very comfortable bedroom
The rooster that wakes us up every morning
I suspect he knows he's dinner
C'mon I had to throw in one of myself
Housemates Jordan (left) and Stephen pretending to work on the patio
You know what stands out most in your picture.. it is the freshness and neatness of your environment. It doesn't have the filth, squalor that I associate with India.
I am not saying it looks rich or prosperous in any way, but it doesn't look beat-up either. Is it just these pictures, or is it like that generally?
I remember Zambia as really bright and clean - but that was 25 years ago. In fact, when I came to India the first time as a five year old, it was the filth that took me by surprise. The first time I cried and wanted to go back to Zambia was when I stepped on cow-dung on the streets of Gwalior.
But I wonder, if my experience will be different now.
Hey Chetna, Well Freetown is not clean or idyllic, I can guarantee that. I wanted to cry and go back when I first landed here. But now I'm trying to look for the silver lining under the piles of garbage

Hey Chetna,
